Photographic Artist Statement

Even though I have just recently started to get more into photography, my experiences so far with this medium have helped me develop into the photographic artist who I identify as now.
To me art is a way to express yourself without speaking. A lot of the time artwork can say so much more than words can, hence the saying;" A picture is worth 1000 words". Art has helped me get through the tough times in my life, and enjoy the happy times even more; so it definitely holds a special place in my heart. In the last couple years I have started travelling more which has definitely influenced my love of photography and has encouraged me to become better. This year my school started offering a photography course; I was intrigued by it so I decided to take it to expand my portfolio. I am happy to say that taking this course was definitely a good decision.
As a photographic artist I always try to push the boundaries and use my artistic abilities to create unique artistic photographs. When I first started I was taking "good" photos that were pleasing to the eyes, but there was nothing unique about them; they were photographs that you would expect to see. With my recent works I have started to get more into using photo editing software to add that special touch that some photos need. After taking photography I would say that I specialize in artistic portrait photography.
Being a photographic artist comes with lots of responsibility. Since we live in a generation where photographers have access to various photo manipulation softwares, sometimes the viewer has to question if what they are viewing is actually real. I believe that as a photographer it is my responsibility to tell you as the viewer what I digitally modify in my work, and to not overly retouch my images to the point of not looking real.
Even though I am still not sure what I want to be when I am older I am thinking about a possible career in graphic design, and possibly bringing this skill into marketing.
Hi I'm Kirsten

Overall I think that my finished photography/ visual art portfolio has turned out extremely well. I think that there are many elements which combined to make my portfolio turn out how it has. I think that the best parts of my portfolio are the page dedicated to showcasing my photography, my splash page, and my welcome page.
Personally out of these three parts of my portfolio I ultimately think that my welcome page turned out the best. I think that my welcome page effectively showcases one of my best works from this semester, this work being the cover to my 2018 gift calendar. I chose this graphic to be on my welcome page because I thought that it captured my style as a photographer the best. Since it is a fairly bold and dramatic photo I thought that it would be perfect to be used as the cover of my website as it will draw the viewers attention, and draw them into my website. By using this photo I think that it will help me overall as a photographer and will hopefully allow my website to draw in more viewers. I also think that my page that showcases all of my work from this semester was also very well done. The way which I have organized my photos creates a pleasing photographic aesthetic (visually appealing) which makes the viewer want to admire the page for longer. Finally I think that my splash page was also effective because of the slideshow format that I presented it in, this was by far the most effective way to present it as it showcases a variety of styles in an easy to access format.
I think that the least successful part of my portfolio would be the page which showcases my creative process. I would say that this page is least successful mainly because of how difficult it was to showcase my steps to achieve the final process. I found it very difficult to do this because when I was originally doing my work I did not save it as individual “work in progress” files as I went. This ended up not working very well for me because I ended up having to re do some of my projects to imitate the steps I took to achieve the final product.
If I were to do my portfolio again I would probably put more effort into my creative process page. I think that this would make my portfolio much better because this way the viewer would be more informed about what I do as a photographic artist to reach my final product.
